Style with Substance (Designer)

To gain a deeper understanding of Substance Designer I created a project that would use a stylized aesthetic, rather than the more common realistic material design. That said, I still wanted the materials to use a PBR model to have the most portability.

Flat Surface Materials

I began with the materials that would end up being on flat surfaces like the roof and sides of the house. The images on the left are on rounded cylinders only to accentuate the height map tesselation.

I started with the shingles and then moved to the siding and learned a lot in the process. Particularly in using ony the available nodes in substance designer and methods of channel packing that will be very useful when these are implemented in engine.

Inspiration

My specific inspiration for this project was the hand painted aesthetic that has become synonymous with games by Blizzard and has been co-opted by many games. On the right is an example of the style that I am emulating, the source for which can be found here.

I decided to make the materials for a house, as this project seemed to be a great resource for creating environmental assets quickly.
